Community First Fox Cities Marathon a huge success

Participants, volunteers, sponsors and spectators collaborate for a healthy, showcase event

Monday, September 23, 2013
A delightful early fall weekend greeted nearly 7,400 walkers and runners of all ages Sept. 20-22 for the 23rd annual Community First Fox Cities Marathon presented by Kimberly-Clark.

“It was a terrific weekend,” said Cathie Tierney, CFCU President/CEO. “We were blessed with incredible weather, volunteers and community support.”

CFCU sends out a heartfelt thank you to all participants along with sponsors, volunteers and many spectators that once again made the Marathon Weekend of Events a showcase for the Fox Cities.

Besides record participation by runners and walkers, over 2,300 volunteers helped make the Guardian Kids Fun Run, the Affinity Medical Group Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine 5K Run/Walk, the Network Health Health & Wellness Expo, the ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus Half Marathon, the Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley Relay Marathon and the full marathon safe and enjoyable for all.

Mike Heling captured the men’s marathon while Carolyn Smith was the top female finisher.

No matter how they finished, many marathoners enjoyed a great fall day for a run.

“I love this race – all the enthusiasm, the volunteers, the music, the race course – it was a beautiful day and no wind,” said Ann Keidatz of De Pere. “I just wanted to cross the finish line upright and smiling and I did.”

Amy Toporski of Appleton agreed. “This is my third Fox Cities Marathon and my best time ever by eight minutes. Community First is the best. The community spirit, everybody’s so happy, there’s so much good crowd support, being in my local backyard I ran by the house I grew up in. It was just awesome. It was a wonderful day.”

“It was fantastic,” said K-C executive Jeff Curtin, a marathon board member and participant. “Kimberly-Clark has been part of this community for many, many years. We have over 3,000 employees in the valley and we try to promote healthy and active lifestyles. This just shows our commitment to caring for the communities where we live and work.”

Over 1,300 participated Sept. 21 in the Affinity 5K Run/Walk where $5 of each entry fee went to the St. Elizabeth Hospital Heart Fund. “It's so heartwarming to see this event come together every year – and we are honored to be part of it,” said Tonya Dedering, Affinity Health System regional director of philanthropy who is a CFCU member/owner and a 5K walk participant. “The $5 5K proceeds will certainly make a big difference in our ability to care for many individuals who seek heart, lung and vascular services at hospital.”

Craig Gloudemans, a CFCU accounting manager who has run the half marathon since 2007 with friends and family members, says he is honored to be both an employee and a member/owner of a financial cooperative that helps so many people and is the driving force behind a premiere Fox Cities’ event. “Community First Credit Union has proven that it really puts the community first.”
