February 3, 2010 APPLETON, WI – The Community Fist Credit Union Annual Membership Meeting was held on Monday, February 1st, at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton. More than 800 members and their families attended to celebrate the credit union’s 35 years of service as a financial cooperative.
Community First Credit Union’s President/CEO Catherine Tierney discussed how the credit union has made a difference for their members, their communities and the credit union industry in 2009. Highlights from the presentation included:
· 2,664 new members joined Community First in 2009 bringing total membership to 84,536.
· Assets increased to 1.35 billion – 15.8%.
· Deposits balances grew by 15.5%.
· Loan outstandings grew by 6%.
· The credit union’s new website launched in May.
· Two new branches opened in 2009 – In July the Credit Union’s first Brown County branch opened in De Pere; and in December a second location opened in Oshkosh on South Park St.
· Community First Won their Challenge Against IRS on Unrelated Business Income Tax.
· Opened first elementary school branch in the Fox Valley area at Jefferson Elementary in Appleton.
Special recognition was given to two member/owners for their role testifying on behalf of Community First Credit Union during the trial against the IRS regarding unrelated business income tax and member/owner Attorney David Van Lieshout for his guidance and support during the litigation.
Four younger employees from the Jefferson Elementary School branch helped welcome members to the meeting and then were introduced to all attendees at the start of the meeting. A video presentation featuring the newly opened Jefferson Elementary School branch showed how the credit union provides financial education through financial literacy activity days and credit union deposit days for the school’s kindergarten through 6th grade students. After the video presentation Community First presented Jefferson Elementary School Principal Tiffany Frerks and Teachers Cookie Wenning and Cathy Porter with $5,000 to help re-build the school’s playground.
Members of the credit union voted three candidates to the Credit Union’s Board of Directors. Re-elected to serve three-year terms were Dr. Susan May, Catherine Tierney, CCUE, and Dean Hawkinson.
