Help Stock the Shelves to fight hunger in Wisconsin

Stop by any Community First branch to participate

Thursday, October 3, 2019
Hunger is a real and daily struggle for more people than most of us realize.

We have an opportunity to make a difference for those individuals and families who battle food insecurity every day.
Through October 31, Community First Credit Union’s 25 full-service branches will accept donations of money and nonperishable goods in a joint effort with other credit unions that embrace the people-helping-people philosophy.

Stock the Shelves is an annual campaign organized by USA TODAY NETWORK newsrooms across Wisconsin, in partnership with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. All money raised and food donated goes to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, which uses its food bank distribution system to distribute food to participating food pantries at significantly reduced prices.

“For most of us, not being able to afford groceries for our families or not knowing where your next meal is coming from, is a completely foreign concept,” said Cathy Mutschler, Vice President of Community Relations for Community First. “But for many, it’s a real struggle. This is an opportunity for all of us to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate.”

This year’s goal is to deliver 1 million meals! Every donation collected by Stock the Shelves will stay local.

Our friends at Fox Valley Technical College are delivering Festival Foods grocery carts to credit union branches throughout the region to accept nonperishable goods donations from member-owners, who are also being encouraged to make monetary donations. Monetary donations will be matched by the Greater Fox Cities Chapter of Credit Unions (see full list of participating credit unions below) up to $25,000 in the Fox Cities, up to $9,000 in Green Bay, up to $6,000 in Oshkosh, and up to $2,000 in the Lakeshore area.

In 2018, the Greater Fox Cities Chapter of Credit Unions was the only matching funds sponsor, helping Stock the Shelves raise just under $400,000 statewide.

Since Stock the Shelves began in 2010 as a community challenge project by the Appleton Post-Crescent, more than $4.5 million has been distributed to regional food pantries.

Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin is the state’s leading hunger-relief organization. It has food banks in Appleton and Milwaukee as well as a food bank distribution system. It serves nearly 400,000 people in 36 Wisconsin counties, including 124,000 children.
Greater Fox Cities Chapter of Credit Unions participating in Stock the Shelves 2019 include: Badger Globe, Capital, Community First, CONE, CoVantage, Evergreen, Fox Communities, Premier Financial, Prospera, Thrivent Financial, Unison, Verve, Winnebago Community, Healthcare, Northern Paper Mills, PCM Employees, Schneider Community, Oshkosh Community.
