Community First scholarship recipient eager for future

Deadline Feb. 12 for spring FVTC scholarship sponsored by Community First

Tuesday, February 4, 2020
Stacey Yang is not sure how her future will unfold but the 29-year-old Appleton woman knows she has some exciting options to consider.

Yang knows that come May – when she graduates with a business management degree from Fox Valley Technical College – she will be better equipped to tackle her dreams with knowledge that works for her.
A Michigan native, she is grateful for being selected in November as the fall semester recipient of the $500 Community First FVTC scholarship. She is working part-time on campus and greatly appreciates how the scholarship will help pay for some of her classes and her books.

Stacey went back to school after working for more than 10 years in the restaurant industry, mostly with her family’s restaurant. “I grew up cooking with my father,” she said. “He is the main reason I want to open my own restaurant. I want to be able to cook all the delicious food (and) expand Hmong cuisines into American culture.”

Now, she’s planning to use her book smarts and classroom lessons – including the principles of sales, marketing and business law – to navigate a new career path.

“I love how the business world works,” she said. “I would like to open my own business (or) become a manager at a nice corporate business. I want to be able to expand my horizon to other countries and be able to promote how businesses work in the U.S.”

“Working on campus has taught me many things that will help shape my career, such as public speaking,” she said. “I am still a little shy, but I feel more confident to speak in a small crowd.”

“I like to be challenged,” she said. “This field of study will help me retain all the knowledge that I learn from FVTC and be able to used it one day when I open my own business.”

Feb. 11 deadline looming
For current FVTC students, it’s important to know that Feb. 11 is the deadline for FVTC students to apply for the $500 Community First spring semester scholarship.
